Blu-Ray 100GB Drive and Media Avaliability

June 16th, 2011 – Brendan Lelieveld-Amiro

There has been a lot of talk about 100GB Blu-Ray lately.   This is based on recent discussions with Partners as well as internet research.    It seems the specification for 100 and 128GB Blu-Ray media has been released and manufactures are starting to release product.   100 and 128GB Blu-Ray is being called BD-XL.  The new higher capacity is a result of increasing the per layer capacity from 25GB to 33.4GB.  This is achieved with a technology called i-MLSE (Maximum likelihood Sequence Estimation).  100GB media is comprised of 3x 33.4GB layers.

100GB Blu-Ray Optical Drive

The first publicly available 100GB compatible Blu-Ray writer drive is the Pioneer BDXL bdr-206mbk.  This drive is able to write to 100GB media.  The drive is supposed to be able to read 128GB media once available.  This drive is available from many online retailers at a cost of approximately $200 USD.  The drive will be able to read the 128GB once available.

100GB Blu-Ray Optical Media

Sharp and TDK are currently shipping 100GB Media.  List prices for this media is roughly $75 per disc.  This price is expected to drop considerably as quantities and availability increases.    Other media manufactures (such as Panasonic) are also expected to release 100GB media in the near future.

Restrictions: The MAIL slot and shelves of the library will become busy while the bulk-load operation is ongoing.
When to use: The bulk-load command should be used when there are multiple ‘NewImport’ pieces of media, such as after the archive has been initialized or media has been manually added to the library.
Feedback: Both the mail slot and the media files will become busy (#) during the bulk-load process. Bulk-load is complete when no items are marked as busy.

Time to Complete: Between 30 seconds and 2 minutes, depending on the file system.
Restrictions: 1) Two pieces of media with the same volume label cannot be mounted simultaneously.

2) Only discs with the <READONLY>no</READONLY> flag can be written to.

StorageQuest Inc. announces launch of Centurion DiscHub Manager product

StorageQuest announces launch of Centurion DiscHub Manager product

OTTAWA, Canada – May 5, 2009    StorageQuest, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of a new product called the StorageQuest Centurion DiscHub Manager. This new software product provides powerful optical volume management features to the Centurion DiscHub by DSS, Digistore Solutions (S) Pte. Ltd. This new software product will be bundled with the Centurion DiscHub to create the Centurion DiscHub Workgroup.

A message from the President and CEO for StorageQuest Inc, Marwan Zayed: “The combination of the Centurion DiscHub with the StorageQuest Centurion DiscHub Manager will create an fully loaded 100 slot capacity near-line DVD optical library solution in the neighborhood of $3,000 USD. A comparable solution typically costs many times more for similar features and specifications. We anticipate a great deal demand for this new bundle. The bundle can be utilized by virtually anyone from home user to large businesses”

This new product provides a very easy to use interface for administering the Centurion DiscHub hardware and optical volumes. The volumes created within the software will show up under the virtual drive under My Computer. Writing and reading data is as simple as dragging and dropping to subfolders within the drive letter. Since all discs are written using industry standard UDF Filesystem your media will be safe and readable in any computer for years to come.

“We are pleased to partner with StorageQuest Inc.”, said Victor Foo, CEO, Digistore Solutions (S) Pte. Ltd. “StorageQuest has helped us to created a turn-key easy to use and powerful optical storage bundle. With the 5TB Blu-Ray version of the Centurion DiscHub unit just around the corner we are very confident we will have a winning solution”

Brendan Lelieveld-Amiro, Director Product Development for StorageQuest notes “This is a very easy but powerful optical library management product. The virtual drive created by our software looks and acts just like a traditional hard drive so most third party applications can read and write to our system without even knowing that files and folders are being written out to permanent optical media. Our sophisticated write cache allows many applications and users to read and write in parallel to the system. A feature typically found only in expensive high-end enterprise applications”

The offline media tracking feature is also incredibly easy to use. Each disc exported from the Centurion DiscHub is tracked by the software. The complete file and folder structure is fully browseable within the drive letter. If a user attempts to access the contents of a file the administrator will be notified.

“We at StorageQuest are strong believers of Optical Technology as a very sound medium for long term archiving, compliancy with all accepted regulatory i.e. Sarbanes Oxley, HIPPA and DICOM. In our view the product roadmap of 120 mm optical medium is gaining momentum every day in the professional and enterprise area. StorageQuest approach insures that all media is portable.. StorageQuest offers unlimited offline media tracking as a standard feature.” said President and CEO, Marwan Zayed.

Centurion DiscHub Workgroup will be available through Digistore Solutions from May 8th, 2009

StorageQuest Inc. to Demonstrate Reflector Data Archiving Software for Mac OS X at NAB 2008

StorageQuest Inc. to Demonstrate Reflector Data Archiving Software for Mac OS X at NAB 2007

OTTAWA, Canada – April 16, 2007    StorageQuest, Inc. is pleased to announce a new addition to the popular Reflector® Network Backup and Archiving Manager software family with the upcoming release of Reflector for Macintosh computers.  This version brings unsurpassed data archiving capabilities to users of the Mac OS X operating system by combining powerful, easy to use software with Rimage and Primera disc publishing systems.

The Reflector software package allows users to write large quantities of data automatically spanning across multiple CDs, DVDs or Blu-Ray discs. The discs are automatically recorded and feature uniquely printed labels using a robotic disc publisher system.  Hundreds of gigabytes of data can be easily transferred offline to optical discs enabling this high-volume data publishing and archiving solution.  A built-in database of all files written with Reflector is readily searchable to locate files that have been previously recorded.  Within a network environment, users of both Windows and Macintosh computers can now share the same disc publishing hardware, with file backup and archiving from their workstation.

Ben Whitney, the product manager for Reflector notes, “Macintosh computer systems in the workplace are increasing every year – these systems are now commonly found in many video, photography, graphic design and audio production houses – and we’ve heard the call for an integrated DVD archiving solution.  Our new software will allow Apple users to enjoy the powerful backup and archiving capabilities of Reflector.”

“We are excited to see Reflector’s capabilities extended to Mac users,” said Mike Laven, Director of Sales for Microboards (www.microboards.com). “There are a limited number of disc publishers that even support Apple operating systems, so to see this advanced set of data backup, wizard-driven archival functions available on a Mac is a huge step forward. We are offering the Reflector for Mac product to our channel of video and audio integrators and resellers because we see a tremendous benefit to Mac-based content producers from using StorageQuest’s software.  From its broad archival wizards for day-to-day business data management functions down to the ability to span content across optical media, every feature has a place in a modern studio and production environment.”

The software will be demonstrated at the NAB 2007 show in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 16th through 19th 2007, and will be shown at the Microboards booth (#SL9511). The software will be officially released in May.
